Obertauern is well known for its guaranteed snow—even in spring, wintry road conditions can occur. Winter tires are strictly required.
We additionally recommend carrying suitable snow chains. Even if they are not always mandatory, you will be perfectly prepared for all weather conditions and ensure a safe journey.

The nearby train station is in Radstadt, about 20 kilometers from Obertauern. From there, the public bus or a taxi will take you directly to us at Alpenrose in Obertauern. This way, you can start your journey stress-free, sustainably, and relaxed – without having to search for parking or worry about winter tires.

In January, Obertauern experiences the deepest winter. The ski resort is located at 1,630 to 2,313 meters, the slopes are snow-covered, and the cold temperatures ensure grippy pistes. After the Christmas holidays and before the semester break, it is quieter on the slopes, at the lifts, and in the huts. From the Alpenrose, you can start directly with ski-in/ski-out, and the Gamsleitenbahn 1 is about 100 meters away.

Obertauern is one of Austria's snowiest winter sports resorts. The village is situated at around 1,740 meters, and the ski area extends up to 2,313 meters. An analysis by ski tourism researcher Günther Aigner shows an average maximum snow depth of 264 centimeters for Obertauern, the highest value among the locations compared. The winter season typically lasts from late November to early May, with January being in the middle of peak winter.

It becomes quieter after the Christmas holidays. In Austria, these end on January 6, 2027, while the mid-term breaks do not begin until February 1, 2027, in Vienna and Lower Austria, and February 15, 2027, in Salzburg. In Germany, the Christmas holidays also end in early January, and winter breaks—where applicable—take place in February.
